FPRAZ Board Member Establishes Leadership Committee to Exchange Health and Technology Information

For more than a year, the development team at KJZZ began talking to a variety of local health-related organizations about expanding health, science and innovation reporting. These topics have always held a great deal of interest with the public, and local organizations have been pioneering new products and treatments that are worthy of broader coverage. The premise was that Arizona is full of innovative health and science efforts, yet many of these stories will not entice traditional commercial media because they are sometimes harder to communicate.

The Arizona Community Foundation generously funded a challenge grant to launch the effort, and other funders such as St. Luke's Health Initiatives (SLHI) and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

As a way to add depth and context to the reporting, SLHI, under the leadership of CEO (and Friends Board Member) Suzanne Pfister, has invited a group of health-related organizations to join in a quarterly information exchange with KJZZ reporters. This group consists of communications professionals from hospitals, educational institutions, community health centers, bioscience-related enterprises and other foundations. The group has created a very robust "story bank" of topics and experts that the KJZZ reporters can have quick access to. The quarterly meetings provide an opportunity for these colleagues to meet, share information with each other and talk to KJZZ reporters about ideas that might warrant further coverage. The discussions have been highly interactive and are yielding a variety of positive results.
